Trump poised to name Pat Cipollone as next White House counsel

Pat Cipollone, a veteran Washington lawyer, is likely to be named the next White House counsel, succeeding Don McGahn, who has held the role since President Trump took office last year, according to two White House officials.

Cipollone, who currently practices commercial litigation at Stein Mitchell Cipollone Beato & Missner LLP in Washington, would come into the position following a wave of departures from the White House counsel’s team, which typically staffs as many as 50 attorneys.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump called Cipollone a “great guy,” but declined to say if he will be named as McGahn’s successor, adding only, “He is very talented and a very good man.”

In August, Trump announced in a Twitter post that McGahn would leave his post pending the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was sworn in to the Supreme Court last week following a battle with Democrats who sought to block his nomination over allegations of sexual misconduct. Kavanaugh strongly denied the allegations.
