The New York Post: Carnage in Toronto: Van mows down pedestrians, killing at least 10

A man in a white rental van killed 10 pedestrians and injured 15 others as he tore through the streets of Toronto on Monday, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

The deadly rampage lasted for about two miles until police finally arrested the driver, Alex Minassian, 25, a source said.

Officers started chasing the van shortly before 1:30 p.m. when multiple 911 calls from frantic witnesses came in.

Separate videos show the van plowing through the streets and finally being stopped by police.

In an eerie climax, when police point their guns at the driver, who was by now outside of the van, he is seen responding by pointing what appears to be a weapon.

He appeared to be screaming: “Kill me!” and “Shoot me in the head!”

Toronto Police Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said the suspect is currently being grilled over his motive.

The incident happened about 18 miles north of downtown, where the Group of Seven foreign ministers of industrialized nations, including Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan had gathered for a meeting at the Intercontinental Hotel.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said both local and federal officials were investigating.

“We’re still gathering information and as soon as we can, we’ll share more information with Canadians,” Trudeau told reporters. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected.”

The United States and Europe have seen a string of deadly attacks in which vehicles were used to mow down pedestrians, including an Oct. 31 attack in New York that killed eight.

Essy Taeb, a witness to the Toronto lunchtime scene described it as chaotic.

“Everyone was running all over the place,” Taeb told CP24, a local television news outlet.
