The Margin: Uruguay beats Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo to advance in World Cup knockout rounds

Uruguay knocked out Portugal on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal of the FIFA World Cup in Sochi, Russia, leaving Cristiano Ronaldo without a goal in the knockout stages of the world’s pre-eminent football tournament.

Edinson Cavani scored twice to lead Uruguay to a 2-1 victory over Portugal. Uruguay on Friday will play France, which defeated Argentina 4-3 earlier in the day.

It marks the second advance to the quarterfinal in the last three World Cup tournaments for Uruguay.
