: ‘The Last Jedi’ becomes 2017’s top domestic movie, hits $1 billion worldwide

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” became North America’s highest-grossing movie of 2017 over the New Year’s weekend, as it topped $1 billion in global revenue after just three weeks in theaters.

The eighth installment in the “Star Wars” saga from Walt Disney Co.’s DIS, -0.24%   Lucasfilm, “The Last Jedi” earned an estimated $120.4 million worldwide over the weekend — bringing its global total to $1.04 billion — including $52.4 million domestically, upping its domestic haul to $517.1 million.

After premiering on Dec. 14 with the second-largest opening weekend ever, the film is already the eighth-largest domestic release of all time, just $15 million behind the seventh-place movie, last year’s “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

The weekend haul dropped Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” which grossed $504 million, into second place at the North American box office this year.

“The Last Jedi” is the fourth movie to top $1 billion globally this year. “Beauty and the Beast,” reaped $1.26 billion; “Fate of the Furious,” from Comcast Corp.’s CMCSA, -0.60%   Universal Pictures, earned $1.24 billion; and Universal’s “Despicable Me 3” earned $1.03 billion.

Its hyperspeed pace at the box office is not expected to slow down much anytime soon; “The Last Jedi” will premiere in China, the world’s second-biggest market, on Jan. 5.

Back at home, “Jumanji,” from Sony Corp.’s SNE, -0.75%   Columbia Pictures made $50.6 million in its second week, bringing its total to an impressive $169.8 million.
