Key Words: Onion writer’s routinely recycled mass-shooting headline hits close to home

‘When I wrote this headline, I had no idea it would be applied to the high school a mile from my house.’

Jason Roeder, former Onion writer

After every mass shooting since 2014 satirical news outlet the Onion repeats this story with the headline: “ ‘No way to prevent this,’ says only nation where this regularly happens.”

Wednesday’s deadly high school shooting in Broward County, Fla., in which at least 17 students and adults were killed and many more injured, brought the violence home for Jason Roeder, who can claim that headline.

The Onion simply freshens the date, location and number of casualties as the site reruns its bit of social commentary.

America has six times as many firearm homicides as Canada, and nearly 16 times as many as Germany, according to data from the United Nations. And, sure, the volume of guns, legally owned and not, play a part in the stats. The U.S. has 4.4% of the world’s population but almost half of the civilian-owned guns around the world.

There have been 18 school shootings in the first 45 days of 2018, according to nonprofit gun-control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
