Internet legend Grumpy Cat has died at age 7

Internet and marketing star “Grumpy Cat” has died at the age of seven, her owners said early Friday.

The cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, first appeared on Reddit, then clawed her way into social media lore and onto television beginning in 2012 thanks to a permanent pout that was the result of a form of feline dwarfism and an underbite. She died in the arms of her human earlier this week, due to complications from a urinary-tract infection.

Grump Cat, through her own company founded by owner Tabatha Bundesen, adorned clothing, calendars and soft toys. She made a Christmas film, voiced by Aubrey Plaza, in 2014. In one instance, in 2018, her owners were awarded $710,000 in a federal case in California. Grumpy Cat Limited had sued the owners of coffee company Grenade for exceeding an agreement over the cat’s image.

“Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough,” her owners said in the posting.
