Capitol Report: Trump approval ticks up in poll | Veto threatened on immigration deal

President Donald Trump is getting a polling bump.

The new year has produced a polling bump for President Donald Trump, with 47% of voters approving of the job he’s doing and the same percentage disapproving in a new Politico/Morning Consult survey.

The last time Trump had a positive net approval rating was in April. The same Politico/Morning Consult poll shows that Republicans have erased the Democratic advantage on the generic congressional ballot. Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult’s co-founder and chief research officer, said Republicans are now more trusted to handle the economy.

Corker ‘listening’ as he rethinks retirement: Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker is “listening” amid encouragement from some Republicans to rethink his decision not to run for re-election this year, Fox News reports, citing his spokeswoman. The senator has recently had conversations with the White House and his GOP colleagues about the possibility of reversing his decision to retire, Fox writes. But those close to Corker acknowledge he would need to move swiftly to jump back into campaign mode, since the filing deadline in Tennessee is April 5.

Trump threatens immigration veto: A senior administration official told Axios Trump will veto any immigration bill that doesn’t advance the reforms he favors. That’s a hardening of the White House’s bargaining position as the Senate begins a debate on immigration. Trump wants to build a border wall, end what he calls chain migration and cancel the visa lottery system. Moderate senators are looking to restore protections for “Dreamers” who came to the U.S. as children.
