Capitol Report: Elizabeth Warren fires back at Trump’s ‘Pocahontas’ taunts in speech to Native American group

Senator Elizabeth Warren

Sen. Elizabeth Warren fired back at President Donald Trump for his “Pocahontas” taunts against her in a surprise speech to a Native American event on Wednesday, and said she never used her heritage to advance her career.

The Massachusetts Democrat, a potential 2020 presidential candidate, has been a favorite target of Trump’s. The president has repeatedly used the “Pocahontas” nickname for her, including at a November ceremony honoring Native American code talkers.

Trump Today: President makes ‘Pocahontas’ joke about Sen. Elizabeth Warren at event honoring Native Americans.

“Now we have a president who can’t make it through a ceremony honoring Native American war heroes without reducing Native history, Native culture, Native people to the butt of a joke,” Warren said at a National Congress of American Indians event. “The joke, I guess, is supposed to be on me.”

In her speech, Warren says her mother’s family was part Native American, but also said she understood that tribal membership was determined only by tribes.

Speaking of her parents, Warren said: “They’re gone, but the love they shared, the struggles they endured, the family they built, and the story they lived will always be a part of me. And no one — not even the president of the United States — will ever take that part of me away.”
