Capitol Report: Donald Trump’s flexibility on immigration actually isn’t so secret

If Donald Trump is hiding flexibility about his immigration policy, it’s a fairly open secret.

Trump’s Republican primary rival Ted Cruz said Monday he wants Trump to release a tape of an off-the-record interview he had with the New York Times in January.

BuzzFeed has a story on the audio recording, in which Trump reportedly said something about the flexibility of his immigration stance. The Republican presidential front-runner has called for deporting undocumented immigrants and building a wall along the Mexican border with the U.S. — which he says Mexico will pay for.

If the transcripts are released and show Trump being open to negotiating his immigration policy, it won’t be the first time. Here, for example, is a section from an interview Trump did with the Washington Examiner, in which he is asked if “deporting all illegal immigrants” is an opening position in a negotiation.

Cruz asked Trump to release the interview before Tuesday’s primaries, in which voters in 11 states award delegates.

BuzzFeed said the Times’ editorial page editor, Andrew Rosenthal, said that Trump is free to call the newspaper and request a release of the transcript. “He’s free to do that and then we can decide what we would do,” Rosenthal told BuzzFeed.

A Trump spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
